You can use letters, calligraphic strokes or both! A calligram is a shape made up of or filled with calligraphic strokes, letters or not. Does this help?

In any of my Blackletter practice sheet sets for sale, will be a section called the “5 guidelines of flourishing” which may be what you are looking for. While not totally comprehensive, it does provide a great start to learning blackletter flourishing, like some do’s and don’ts with examples.

Okay. I’m searching for a tutorial or guide on incorporating decorative flourishes into blackletter calligraphy. My efforts to find resources on flourishing within the context of blackletter calligraphy have been unsuccessful. While I have found some visual examples of flourishing with Blackletter, pictures, artwork, etc. I have yet to find comprehensive information on the techniques, principles, best practices, and common pitfalls to avoid. I would appreciate any information you may have on the subject.
